What The Rain Yields

In this story, a heavy rain coaxes an abundance of night crawlers out of the ground and yields a bucketful of potential worm sales for this young lady and her brothers. The only problem was the fact that they choose to take the car without permission to deliver the worms to the bait stand. Needless to say, their parents were both distraught and disappointed when the intrepid night crawler salesmen return home. This account sparked worm hunting memories of my own which I shared in a post yesterday.

Check out the process from thumbnail to finish here:

This is a great illustration, though my first thought was "disgusting" (worms, maggots and larvae make me choke).
But the colours, the lighting and the expression on her face are beautiful.

Beautiful piece, Greg! I really admire the narrative quality of your work --- story and mood always come across so clearly.
BTW - Thanks for all the great posts on your blog. You're giving James Gurney a real run for his money!

Thanks Roland and Angela. Jack- I am flattered to be compared in the same breath with Gurney. I think Gurney Journey is what a lot of Illustration blogs aspire to.

Wow. Fabulous illustration. I really really like the whole thing, but especially the way her fingers are pulling on the worm so gingerly.....like yes, she's doing this, but no, she doesn't really like to touch them.....

Wow, I love the perceptive on this illustration. This must have taken hours to do. you have blades of grass, the meltng of the snow, and carefully thought out higlights on her face. I thought I was detail in my drawings, but I could learn alot from you!

Beautiful! Great storytelling! I love your use of light & color. And agree--the way her fingers are plucking the worm is fantastic!
